Corrective Grinding

Case study graphic 4

The switches in question were in a poor state of repair and were deteriorating towards an O53 failure.

The location of these works, within a tunnel at the Heathrow complex, lent this project a critical element. Thus, a concentrated effort was needed from both sides to ensure the satisfactory outcome.

In addition, the tunnel location meant that the company had to source and secure hydraulic grinding machines, as petrol machines were prohibited within the tunnel.

The site was scoped jointly by NR and McGinley and an expectation of the quality level was established from the outset. A NR representative was present to check that the agreed standards had been achieved.

The company?s team consisted of a GSM and 6 Corrective Grinding Operatives, whilst the work was completed within 1 weekend and 4 midweek shifts.

The key factors of the success of these works were:

  • The close working relationship that exists between the NR Project Manager and the Company?s GSM.
  • The utilisation of a highly skilled and motivated workforce, with over 3-years experience of grinding works in the region.
  • The heightened knowledge and commitment of the Company?s GSM.
  • The in-house training provided by McGinley to ensure the worker has the correct skill base for the work being tackled.
