Thermit Welding

Case study graphic 1

The Track Relaying Train was employed on several sites on the SDI2 during the commissioning stage.

McGinley was engaged to burn the track prior to the commencement of the commissioning and to Thermit weld all closure rails and IRJ?s.

This was the first instance of the TRT running within the UK and, as such, large and lengthy occupations were required. In addition, the scope of the works changed on a number of occasions as the performance and operational ability of the TRT improved.

The company?s team consisted of a Welding Supervisor and a Welder to work with the TRT team throughout the commissioning period, whilst the company provided up to 5 other teams to during the period.

The client selected McGinley for the commitment made by the management to have welding teams active in all elements of the trial. Whilst on site, operatives were carrying out numerous other duties such as cutting-in works and Level 1&2 re-stressing

The key factors of the success of these works were:

  • The close working relationship that exists between the client and McGinley and the Company?s Welding Manager.
  • The utilisation of a highly skilled and motivated workforce, with over 5-years experience of welding works in the region.
  • The flexibility to provide the client with short notice call-off of supplementary welding teams.
  • The additional duties undertaken by McGinley staff resulted in 100% productivity for the welding teams.
