Project Overview
In January 2018, McGinley Support Services was awarded the contract to supply tunnelling labour for the Thames Tideway Central project managed by the Ferrovial Laing O’Rourke (FLO) Joint Venture. This ambitious infrastructure project, stretching from Fulham to Blackfriars, involved constructing a 12.7km tunnel with a diameter of 7.2 metres, including 8 shafts between 42 and 62 metres deep, and various connecting tunnels, sewer interceptors, and valve rooms. McGinley is proud to have played a crucial role in the successful completion of this project.
Objective
The primary objective was to ensure a steady supply of highly skilled tunnelling operatives to meet the complex requirements of the project, adhering to stringent safety and quality standards. Performance targets included timely mobilisation of the workforce, maintaining high standards of operational efficiency, and supporting the project's socio-economic goals.
Challenges
The project posed several challenges, including the need to operate under compressed air conditions up to 5.3Bar, sourcing a diverse and skilled workforce within tight timelines, and maintaining workforce stability amidst competitive labour rates across different sections of the Thames Tideway Tunnel project.
Solution and Achievements
McGinley implemented a tailored recruitment, selection, and induction process, rapidly mobilising an initial team of 50 operatives within three weeks and scaling up to meet peak demands within six weeks. The range of operatives supplied included SCL sprayers/nozzlemen, Supervisors, PIT Bosses, TBM Drivers, Leading Miners, TBM Back-Up Crew, Fitters, and Electricians.
Significant achievements include:
First Female Tunnelling Operative: We were proud to place Andreea, believed to be the first woman on the tunnelling side of the project. Initially starting as a traffic marshall, she was upskilled to a slinger/signaller.
Apprenticeship Programme: McGinley supported the NVQ Level Two Tideway Tunnelling Operative Apprenticeship scheme, welcoming and mentoring apprentices, one of whom successfully completed the 18-month programme.
Community Engagement: Our 'ADVANCE' programme actively participated in local job fairs, open days, and school engagement sessions. We recruited ex-military personnel, ex-offenders, and women in construction, promoting diversity and inclusion.
Local Recruitment: We employed operatives from local boroughs, providing training and career advancement opportunities. Notably, Charles Falconer progressed from traffic marshall to slinger/signaller, aspiring to become a crane supervisor.
Laundry Service: McGinley operated a laundry service ensuring PPE was maintained in optimal condition, supporting the health and safety of the workforce.
