Carbon Reduction Plan
Publication Date: 17/02/2025

Our commitment to achieving net zero

McGinley Support Services (Infrastructure) Limited is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050. This will cover Scope 1, 2 and those of Scope 3 categories that are applicable to our business (business travel and employee commuting).
Our Carbon Reduction Plan, below, has been prepared in response to the requirements of the Procurement Policy Note 06/21.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions.
Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Current Emissions Reporting

McGinley has expanded its Scope 3 reporting to include a more comprehensive assessment of business travel and employee commuting, aligned with ESOS Phase 3 data.

Emissions Reduction Targets

McGinley reaffirms our commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2050.

We project that carbon emissions will decrease to 2,000 tCO2e by 2026 through continued implementation of carbon reduction measures.

To continue our progress in achieving Net Zero, McGinley will continue measuring and monitoring our emissions via ESOS, which is administrated by the Environment Agency. We have found the ESOS measurement framework to be strategically effective in identifying and tailoring cost-effective measures, enabling us to conserve energy and achieve carbon and cost savings. We estimate that the ESOS audit costs are significantly outweighed by the savings made from implementing the recommended measures.

In addition, through our work on CP6, we are collaborating with Network Rail on their science-based Target (SBT) commitments. This commitment aims to reduce absolute Scope 1 & 2 GHG emissions by 46% by FY2029, with 75% of suppliers having Science-based Targets by FY2025 and reducing absolute Scope 3 indirect use phase emissions by 28% by FY2029.

Progress against these targets can be seen in the graph below:

Carbon Reduction Projects

Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives

As a national provider of contingent labour, McGinley’s carbon impact is predominantly linked to transport emissions, which account for 96% of total emissions.

The following key initiatives have contributed to emission reductions:

  • Fleet Telemetry (2019): A 33% reduction in road traffic accidents led to reduced fuel consumption and emissions.
  • Fleet Management: Moving fleet operations in-house and appointing a dedicated Fleet Manager has helped reduce Scope 1 emissions.
  • Office Consolidation: Combining multiple southern offices into a BREEAM Outstanding building reduced energy use by 31%.
  • ISO14001 Certification: Continuous alignment with environmental management best practices.
  • Driver Handbooks: Fuel-efficient driving guidelines are issued to all drivers.
  • Supply Chain Sustainability School Partner: McGinley has maintained Gold Member status since 2018.
  • Flexible Working Policies & Sustainable Commuting: Encouraging cycle-to-work schemes, car sharing, and public transport usage.

The carbon emission reduction achieved by these measures equates to a 50% reduction in total carbon emissions since the 2017 baseline year.

Planned Future Measures:

  • Vehicle Upgrades: Transition to Euro 6.2 AdBlue and EV vehicles within the next three years. We are beginning to trial EV’s from 2025.
  • United Nations Race to Zero Commitment: Supporting global decarbonisation efforts.
  • Office Energy Efficiency Improvements:
    • Installation of smart plugs for office appliances.
    • Implementation of PIR & LUX sensors to improve lighting efficiency.
    • Exploration of alternative heating options for office locations.
